High-Density Wi-Fi for sports and home entertainment places is now more accessible than ever, thanks to Cisco’s Catalyst 9104. In all of my years working for Cisco, this has actually been among the most amazing projects I’ve ever dealt with. Seeing the procedure from conception to the first complete permanent installation at Geodis Park in Nashville, TN has been satisfying and honestly, just plain cool. See the video below!

How it went down!
Back in September of 2020, throughout the office shutdowns triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic, I composed my first-ever blog. I spoke about how Cisco engineers were utilizing the downtime to produce brand-new items that would be all set when the world returned out to play. The Driver 9104 is the result of that work.
New Product Goals:
- Lower Expense
- Much easier to deploy
- Did not require an enclosure
- Ability to beam switch, beam guide
- Serve wifi customers at a higher distance
- Resulting in High-density Wi-fi that changes the game
Fast forward to October 2022 and I was able to see the outcomes of that work. I signed up with Ken Martin, Head of Cisco’s Sports and Entertainment sales in addition to Bill Anderson, President/CEO of Cisco partner Ampthink, at Geodis Park in Nashville, TN to check out the really first irreversible install of the Cisco Driver 9104. Sure, there were other 9104 installs, but they were smaller momentary celebration and conference networks. In contrast, the network at Geodis Park was created from day 1 with the 9104 as the focal point.
It was so cool being able to witness the product that we had spent well over a year developing (thanks once again COVID-19) working exactly as we had actually created it to. This is what I like about operating at Cisco. This task was what engineers like me (and others) live for.
- We sat down with customers and partners and get their feedback on what they wanted … what they required from Cisco prior to developing it.
- Then we took that info back to our hardware design teams, item management groups, software application, and test groups.
- It was a series of innovations, screening, re-testing, verifying, and finally …
- Delivering to the organization which had trusted us to create their network around the 9104 before it was even readily available for sale!
Really rarely is someone able to see the full procedure from end to end.
Hats off to all the amazing groups at Cisco that worked on this product and to the consumers and partners that supplied important feedback from the very beginning, you know who you are.
The Catalyst 9104 has actually altered the high-density wi-fi game. Now fans at Geodis Park can sit back and enjoy the game.
