Generative AI is off to a rough start


It’s been a rough month for generative AI(GenAI). First, AWS introduced Amazon Q, its response to Microsoft’s Copilot, just to have its own workers caution of “extreme hallucinations”and information leaks. Then Google released Gemini, its response to ChatGPT, to much fanfare and an extraordinary demo, just to acknowledge after the reality that the demonstration was phony. Oh, and Meta launched brand-new open source tools for AI safety(hurray!) yet somehow stopped working to acknowledge the most egregiously unsafe element of GenAI tools: their vulnerability to trigger injection attacks.I could go on, however what would be the point? These and other failures don’t recommend that GenAI is vacuous or a hype-plagued dumpster fire. They’re indications that we as a market have enabled the promise of AI to overshadow current truth.
