< img src=" https://www.techrepublic.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/mondaycom-work-os.jpeg "alt ="" > No matter the team size or market, monday.com has a series of usage cases to make it possible for work management, and its membership rates are some of the most economical in the market. Loaded with robust functions, my experience is that cloud-based monday.com Work OS is one of the most innovative platforms for task and procedure management.

Evaluation approach
This review is based on my personal experience registering, configuring, and executing a project in monday.com. The sample project I built in the tool is a three-month application development timeline with 6 sprints and over 20 core jobs. The columns listed included task name, start and end dates, assigned contact, status, period, conclusion percentage, and notes. On the other hand, rows organize sprint tasks and subtasks into sprints. Two sprints consist of several subtasks.

What is monday.com?
monday.com is the software business that develops monday.com Work OS, a cloud-based work management software.
The monday.com Work OS work management platform consists of six products covering customer relationship management (CRM), marketing, task and portfolio management, form generation, and a collaborative whiteboard. Thought about together, there are couple of teams who would not benefit from monday.com’s abilities.
Founded in 2012 in Tel Aviv, Israel, the business was originally referred to as dapulse for its first five years. Today, the monday.com brand name is as strong as any in the PM industry. In its decade of experience, the Israeli work management platform has actually grown quickly and received several rounds of financing. The software application supplier crossed the billion dollar appraisal mark in 2019 to reach unicorn status, and despite a competitive space, monday.com reveals no indications of slowing down with over 150,000 worldwide clients.

monday.com Work OS introduction
monday.com uses a totally free trial, totally free strategy, and range of premium SaaS memberships to give various groups the work management capabilities for transforming processes.
Start with the monday.com desktop or mobile app
From the monday.com homepage, users can produce an account with their service email address. After inputting their e-mail, users select their intended usage, present role, group size, and company size. Last prompts ask what sort of work the registrant wish to handle initially, like marketing, operations, IT and finance, and preliminary focus.
For this job, I chose work usage, group leader for function, a team of 11-15 individuals at an organization of 251-500 people, handling software development, and job management for the focus.
Users can name their team and make a last choice of what row values represent. In Figure A, monday.com points to its myriad of project uses with choices for employees, clients, tasks, spending plans, and more to choose.
Figure A
< img src =" https://www.techrepublic.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/TR.monday.SelectInitialRowValues-770x387.png" alt="" width=" 770" height=" 387"/ > Image: Sam Ingalls/TechRepublic. Picking a row worth is an important part to tracking task data. As my project currently determines rows as jobs, this was an easy selection. Users can then call different groups of tasks– different groups are suggested in Figure A by blue and purple lines– such as job stages, timeframes, or a custom section label prior to being rerouted to their preliminary project.
Later on, users will need to confirm their e-mail, at which point they can also personalize how they use the app with a profile photo, mobile app download, brand-new user invitations, and profile details like title, telephone number, birthday, and time zone.
Finishing this initial onboarding– particularly setting up notifications– is important to an ideal user experience and ensures you do not wind up with an inbox loaded with notifies from monday.com. Relative to other platforms, monday.com over-communicates with new users, so take the time to fine-tune notices to action items.
monday.com Work OS functions and workflows
Features | monday.com Work OS |
---|---|
Data import | The task management platform can publishing and integrating Google Sheets and Microsoft Excel data. |
Personalization | monday.com offers users a Main Table for storing all data with a handful of extra views for various visual employees or improving visibility and productivity. |
Partnership | All of the leading PM software solutions consist of a handful of options for viewing and engaging with project data– spreadsheets, Kanban boards, and Gantt charts to name a few. The monday.com Work OS features these and more for different ways to enhance visual collaboration. |
Automations | From the Automations Center, users have access to a long list of pre-built automations for processes like notifying stakeholders, altering job statuses, or creating and moving items proceeding another action. |
Import job data from Excel file
On the leading right of the monday.com Work OS web page, logged-in users can choose the 3 dots to open an administrative menu (Figure B) for the board.
From the empty task board, I browsed to the admin menu, opened the sub-menu for “More actions” followed by “Import Tasks.” Using my existing Google Sheets job information, I submitted the.xlsx file, picked the critical very first column value (task name), and how the Excel columns will move to existing board columns.
Figure B
< img src =" https://www.techrepublic.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/TR.monday.ImportTasks-770x534.png" alt="" width=" 770" height=" 534"/ > Image: Sam Ingalls/TechRepublic. From a project board, users can open their administrative menu to import tasks from an existing spreadsheet. Sadly, the monday.com Work OS import engine only allows you to select one date column, one status column, and one person column to move. The latter (person column) was not supported in my import, in part since I have not included fellow employee yet. While rational possibly, this would disrupt a group leader’s ability to establish the project prior to onboarding employee.
Users can choose how to handle duplicates by developing brand-new products, avoiding products, and overwriting existing products. I picked “Produce brand-new items” in the hope remaining columns would be contributed to the project, but alas, as soon as imported the only ones to make it (Figure C) were the two columns enabled: status and date.
Figure C
< img src =" https://www.techrepublic.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/TR.monday.ImportResults-770x604.png" alt="" width=" 770" height=" 604"/ > Image: Sam Ingalls/TechRepublic. Imported spreadsheet state appears in the very first few rows of the user’s Main Table. Compared to other PM software application import procedures, just importing three columns (when consisting of the task name) is quite disappointing. While it took me half an hour to change the board to reflect the original project information, it’s frightening to consider how long a modification duration is for a group dealing with large amounts of existing data.
Producing and customizing your board
Main Table: Source of all
Whereas other PM platforms will highlight a team’s ability to handle data throughout multiple views (one person in the Kanban, another in Gantt)– I’ve found those platforms battle to duplicate performance across all views. The primary data source List, Table or Sheet see often offers the most in actually configuring task information. That said, I appreciate monday.com clearly identifies a source of all job data: the Main Table.
The Main Table (Figure D) is familiar for spreadsheet users except rows are divided into various areas or, in this case, sprints. The Main Table shows information for the first couple of sprints including two subtasks in Sprint 3. Underneath each area is a convenient battery progress tracker showing where sprint task status shows through a color breakdown.
Figure D

The versatility of column worths can’t be overstated when working with PM tools– the more versatility a project lead or team member has to add intricate data points, the better. With a whole Column Center, monday.com has one of the most considerable lists of potential field inputs in the PM software application market. While not every team will need the level of column worths, monday.com’s stack of alternatives opens the door to niche usage cases.
Figure E
< img src =" https://www.techrepublic.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/TR.monday.ColumnCenter-770x493.png" alt="" width=" 770" height=" 493 "/ > Image: Sam Ingalls/TechRepublic. The Column Center uses teams a lot of choices from a list of typical and distinct data inputs.
Row abilities
Rows are simple to drag and drop in between different groups, and the capability to choose several rows is a helpful feature. I dragged jobs into corresponding sprints, but users can likewise perform mass operations on groups of tasks including replicating, exporting, archiving and deleting the group.
As I adjusted information for my job, I had the ability to pick and change future jobs, the bulk of the task with unfilled statuses to “Not Begun” with the multi-selection feature (Figure F). Hovering over the left side of rows, users can click the drop down arrow to also alter a private row.
Figure F
< img src =" https://www.techrepublic.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/TR.monday.Rows_-770x246.png" alt="" width=" 770" height=" 246"/ > Image: Sam Ingalls/TechRepublic. Users can select and modify a single row or select multiple rows for carrying out actions on groups of tasks. Collaborate across different project views
From a project board, teams can produce as lots of deem wanted and several variations of the platform deem dashboards. Users can also mark the views they like best as favorites, which surface areas those views to the top of the list.
On my project board I could select from adding a table (spreadsheet), Gantt or Kanban board, dashboard, chart, cards, kind, or files galley. Through partner ports, users can also integrate apps by monday.com or third-party applications. Apps established by monday.com include tools like an interactive world, efficiency insights, working status, and embedded Airtable data, while other market apps include Canva, ClickUp, Google Workspace, Hootsuite, Miro, Optino, and more.
Control panel
The Dashboard is an excellent way to tailor widgets for an organized view of different job data points. Users can pick from visual charts, numbers, files, workloads, calendars, and even a Gantt chart to combine details on a single page. The dashboard supplies a flexible area to include and view numerous widgets.
Figure G
< img src =" https://www.techrepublic.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/TR.monday.DashboardGantt-770x330.png" alt="" width=" 770" height=" 330"/ > Image: Sam Ingalls/TechRepublic. Users can configure their dashboard with custom widgets imagining and tracking project data. On the group control panel( Figure G), the very first couple of widgets show a battery suggesting where jobs range by development status, a 2nd showing the group budget plan for external professionals, and a Gantt chart. These widgets and others used were simple to configure and walk around the board. On the bottom right of widgets, users can broaden the size of widgets and drag-and-drop to perfect positions on the board.
Kanban
On very first glance, monday.com’s Kanban looks like a lot of with lanes of tasks divided by a condition like task development. Users can drag and drop tasks from lane-to-lane (horizontally) or within a lane (vertically) or filter the whole board by a designated condition.
When producing the Kanban board (Figure H), all jobs appeared with their matching individual designated and subitems. With the extra job information I found seeing the board was a little bit clunky, nevertheless, this is an easy repair with setup settings.
On the right-hand side of the Kanban, users can change how the Kanban board runs and displays info. My board was pre-configured to reveal “Person” and “Subitems” situated in the settings menu, however de-select these fields and the board goes back to only the job name. When once again, monday.com reveals it uses the versatility for groups to select how they want to work.
Figure H
< img src =" https://www.techrepublic.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/TR.monday.Kanban-770x440.png" alt="" width=" 770" height=" 440 "/ > Image: Sam Ingalls/TechRepublic. The Kanban board permits users to move tasks throughout lanes of a white board and configure what data is revealed for
tasks. Types While other in-platform kind builders typically offer very little options for configuration, the WorkForms function (Figure I) offers plenty to customize resulting in a clean and efficient form for data collection. Users can choose from a long list of input triggers, modify language and branding, configure post-submission settings, and show a URL or straight by means of social media. Users can set a destination for kind responses for automatic inclusion in existing job information.
Figure I

. Automations An important tourist attraction to PM tools is their automation capabilities and monday.com Work OS offers plenty to think about. I developed an automation (Figure J) where the job supervisor and board subscribers are alerted when the status of a task modifications to “Done.” This automation can ensure stakeholders stay notified about task or product status without the additional effort these interactions frequently require. While a small include when considered alone, automations can conserve teams dealing with large datasets and complicated procedures a great deal of discomfort.
Figure J
< img src =" https://www.techrepublic.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/TR.monday.Automation-770x450.png" alt="" width=" 770" height=" 450"/ > Image: Sam Ingalls/TechRepublic. Automations track triggers within task data to conduct designated actions when something has occurred.
When developing the automated procedure, I was impressed by the list of options for setting up the automation specifications. Automations can be as easy as a fast notice to a Slack channel, but that’s only the beginning. Users can build a domino effect to run multi-step procedures with routine and third-party combination actions.
